Top Tips for Running a Club or Society

Are you passionate about a particular hobby, cause, or interest? Do you want to create a sense of community around it and engage with like-minded individuals? Then running a club or society might be for you! Not only can it enhance your university experience, but it can also leave a lasting impact on campus life. Ahead of our Clubs and Societies Fair next week, let's check out some top tips for starting a club or society...

1. Identify Your Passion

Before diving into setting up a club or society, identify your passion or interest. Whether it's art, sports, social causes, or academic pursuits, choosing a topic that resonates with you will help make the process of running a group feel more worth it. Plus, when people can tell that you are passionate about what you do, others will be drawn to join in.

2. Do Your Research

Take the time to research existing clubs and societies at AUP. Understanding what's already available can help you identify gaps or areas where your group can offer something unique. This will help colour what works well for other groups and what you can learn from their successes.

Once you've decided on your club or society, fill out a form from the Students' Union and hand it in to the Student Union Office! We aim to have the club or society processed 5 working days.

Once this has been approved and created, congratulations, you're now a Club or Society Lead! Every month the Student Union President hosts Club/Society Lead Drop-Ins in the Students' Union, where you can come and brainstorm ideas, get support with applying for funding and book the Students' Union for events.

3. Recruit a team

Building a club or society is all about community, and finding like-minded individuals as passionate as yourself. Reach out to friends, classmates, and even lecturers who share your interest and would be interested in lending a hand. Think about who wants to plan events, organise comms or post on social media channels. Running a group an sound like a lot of work but with a couple of pals it'll be so much more manageable.

4. Plan Engaging Activities and Promote Them

Organise a mixture of activities that cater to different members. From workshops and guest speakers to social events and collaborative projects, offering diverse activities will keep members engaged and excited to participate. Get creative!

Utilise social media, notice boards, and your club/society email group to promote your upcoming events. Engage with fellow students during Clubs and Society Fairs, usually held during Freshers and during the Spring term.

5. Collaborate with Existing Groups

Building relationships with other clubs and societies can open up opportunities for collaboration and mutual support. Partnering with groups that share similar goals or interests can help expand your reach, attract new members, and create enriching experiences through joint events or initiatives. This can also make trips or external events more feasible, as the more members interested in attending, the lower the cost per person.
