Sober Ways to Celebrate Halloween

Updated: Nov 1

Halloween can be a blast but there can also be a lot of expectation to go drinking or clubbing. This blog post explores some of the sober options for celebrating the spooky season. So, grab your pumpkin latte and let’s dive into how you can have a blast this Halloween while keeping it sober!

Halloween Costume Competition!

The SU team will all be dressing up Halloween and we highly encourage you all to come into class decked out in vampire fangs, witches hats and skeleton makeup too! But if that's not your thing, you could host a costume competition with your friend group outside of university. Why not try out a group theme like The Scooby Doo gang, A gaggle of old people or something that begins with the first letter of your name.

Pumpkin Carving Party!

Gather your friends, pick out the perfect pumpkin, and let your imagination run wild. From spooky faces to intricate designs, the possibilities are endless. Don’t forget to roast the pumpkin seeds afterwards for a delicious snack to enjoy!

Not a fan of pumpkins? Make some chocolate covered apples instead or head out to the shop and find a caramel one!

Ghost Tours at Drake's Island

Head over to Drake's Island and take part in a walking tour or get involved in a paranormal investigation! From 6-9pm this spooky event will have you scared and in bed before 10! This idea isn't free but the cost does include the ferry over to the island. Check out their website here for more information.

Movie Marathon!

For an evening of chills and thrills, consider hosting a Halloween movie marathon. Grab some snacks and blankets and screen a selection of classic horror films - bonus points if you make a den in your living room too. You could even get your hands on some candy corn or make a warm pumpkin soup to enjoy whilst you watch.

Tell Ghost Stories!

Brave the weather and head out camping or gather some pals in your garden and light a campfire. Grab the marshmallows and make some s'mores whilst taking it in turns to tell spooky stories to each other.

With Halloween just around the corner, there’s no shortage of spooktacular fun waiting to be had. From costume contests to movie marathons, pumpkin carving parties to haunted campus tours, there are plenty of ways for university students to celebrate in style. So, embrace the spirit of Halloween, get creative, and make this October a month to remember – with or without the boos!
