It's that time of year again - Veganuary!
You might have noticed lots of places jumping in to take part, such as McDonald's releasing the McPlant or KFC releasing Beyond Fried Chicken and the KFC Original Recipe Vegan Burger, but I wanted to talk about the amazing vegan options on our door-stop, specifically focusing on our wonderful local, independent businesses! First let's start with some of the best vegan-only restaurants.
Cosmic Kitchen
Cosmic Kitchen is a family-run, vegan bistro run by twin sisters, Gabriela and Lucia Evangelou, whose ethos is 'Good Mood Food'. It is actually Plymouth’s first 100% vegan bar, inspired by their Cypriot heritage. Did you know Cosmic Kitchen is actually a world class vegan restaurant ranking at number three in the world?!
Power Plant Cafe
Power Plant Cafe is an independent family-run vegan coffee shop and store in the city centre, previously known as Ethica Vegan Store. Their shop serves organic tea and coffee, cakes and sweet treats, and handmade sandwiches and their store is stocked with vegan speciality products, such as chocolate, snacks, sweets and convenience foods as well as coffee beans and brewing gear.
Samphire Brasserie
Samphire Brasserie is another family-run business which is award-winning. They serve modern vegan comfort foods/ "junk food" with an American accent, as well as cakes, a deli and takeout. If you fancy a drink, Samphire Brasserie have a great selection of wines and locally crafted ciders and beers to choose from.
Now, if you're thinking you'd like to sample some vegan food, but don't fancy going the whole 'hog' or if you're looking for somewhere to cater to the varied diets of your family or friends, then check out these restaurants with amazing vegan options.
The Harbour Seafood Restaurant and Takeaway
The Harbour is located on Sutton Harbour, offering the best local seafood that Devon and Cornwall has to offer, as well as offering vegan and gluten free options. Their vegan menu includes vegan fish and chips made from banana blossom with vegan tartare sauce, mock squid rings, a burger, and non-dairy ice-cream.
Bonne Santé
Bonne Santé is situated on the Barbican, offering 'health-oriented global eats', which include both vegan and gluten-free options. As well as offering modern, fresh food and cocktails, you can also enjoy the Bottomless Brunch or Supper.
Hub Box Plymouth
Hub Box is a local business, with locations across Devon and Cornwall, serving up crafted drinks and award-winning prime cut and plant-based burgers. Their ethos is routed in supporting local suppliers and local businesses, as well as the sustainability of their businesses - from electricity to food waste. They are currently in the process of moving to Royal William Yard and should be open in the new couple of months!
Honourable mentions go to Zizzi's and BrewDog Plymouth too.
